Our Amsterdam 750 Years tells the city’s history as it has never been told before. With hundreds of stories about unknown Amsterdammers, about special places, about visitors, migrants, traders, scientists, ministers, slumlords, workers, hustlers, and capitalists. Not about the great white men with their starched white collars of yesteryear, but about Rembrandt’s Black neighbors, the construction of the Greek Orthodox Church, the arrival of an elephant in the city, the clash in Café Zincken between socialists and police, and how immigrants from former Dutch Indies settled in Geuzenveld in the 1950s (bringing rock’n’roll with them).
